Fire at Iowa auto body business involves flammable, toxic chemicals

DES MOINES, Iowa —A third alarm and a Code Red alert were called for a fire at a commercial building in Polk County Monday.

rews were called to The Body Parts Store at 2123 Northeast 46th Ave. about 3 p.m. The scene is just southwest of the east mixmaster where I-80, I-35 and I-235 meet.

Authorities have issued a Code Red for the area to let residents and businesses know they need to stay inside or leave the area due to the smoke.

Polk County officials said one person was hurt in the fire and taken to a metro hospital. That person’s name and condition are not yet available.

Crews have been fighting the flames for hours before they were called to pull back due to concerns about toxic chemicals inside. Part of the metal building was collapsing in on itself by 5:30 p.m.
