Fire breaks out in coal feeder at PA cement plant

Firefighters were dispatched to the Essroc Cement plant in Lower Nazareth Township late Wednesday after Essroc personnel reported an uncontrolled fire, according to emergency radio broadcasts.

The fire at the plant on 3940 Easton-Nazareth Highway, Route 248, was reported in a coal feeder just before 11:50 p.m.

The blaze set off a carbon dioxide fire-suppression system as smoke poured from the plant’s roof. Fire officers consulted with plant officials on the best way to put the fire out.

Plant officials turned off power to the coal feeder as firefighters approached the building to check on the fire shortly after midnight.

By 12:25 a.m., officers radioed that the smoke seemed to be letting up, but they were not certain the fire was out or under control.
