Staff evacuated as firefighters take no risks at flare factory fire

STAFF were evacuated when a fire started at a flare-making factory in Lara today.

Five CFA trucks and police crews were called to Chemring on Staceys Rd because of the fire shortly before 3pm.

The business makes smoke grenades and flares for the defence industry.

A CFA operations officer said although the fire was small and quickly contained, firefighters took extra precautions because of the nature of the business.

He said the fire started in a wall cavity when tradesmen on site were drilling a hole. It spread into a nearby veranda but was contained within about 30 minutes.

“It was pretty innocuous really, but we took the precautions that were necessary given the nature of the business, and the company was very well drilled in terms of its procedures, which helped,” he said.

A WorkSafe officer was on the scene to look into the incident.
