NJ boat house fire damages showroom

JEFFERSON — MarineMax Lake Hopatcong, a new and used boat dealership located on Espanong Road, caught fire early Wednesday morning, causing extensive damage to the showroom, police said.

At about 12:34 a.m., police responded to MarineMax Lake Hopatcong at 134 Espanong Road on a report of a structure fire, and, upon arriving, found that the roof on the showroom portion of the building engulfed in flames, Jefferson Police Capt. Eric Wilsusen said in a news release.

Jefferson Fire Company No. 2, Jefferson Fire Company No. 1, and Picatinny Fire Department responded to scene and were able to extinguish the fire, Wilsusen said.

“However, extensive damage was done to the showroom area of building along with the roof above the showroom,” Wilsusen said.

“The preliminary investigation reveals the fire may have been caused by an exterior lighted sign on the front of the building,” he said.

Detective Lt. John Ottina and the Morris County Sheriff Office, Crime Scene Unit also responded to scene, Wilsusen said.

The investigation is continuing, and no injuries were reported, he said.

Dave VanDeen, fire chief of Jefferson Fire Company No. 1, told NJ.com that Jefferson Fire Company No. 2 was called back out to the site before 9 a.m. Wednesday on a report that the fire had rekindled.
