ELKHART, Ind. -Close to a dozen fire departments responded to a massive factory fire in Elkhart County Sunday morning.
Crews have been on scene at the Lami Plast plant, located near the intersection of Adams and Woodlawn, since just after 2 a.m. We’re told the building is a fiberglass plant.
Our reporter spoke with Asst. Chief Jo Johnston with the Osolo Fire Department who says most of the blaze has been contained, but crews will remain on scene until well into the night, possible until tomorrow morning.
Johnston also says two firefighters were injured while fighting the blaze. The chief says the two were hit by a loose hose and received non-life threatening injuries.
The building was still fully engulfed around 6:30 this morning and continued to burn well past 9 a.m. Heavy, black smoke was seen from miles away.
Johnston says crews were also called out to the factory around 11 Saturday night when a call came in that the roof of the building had caved in due to snow.
A short while later the fire began.
Johnson says it’s too early to tell if the two incidents are connected, but the Fire Marshall has been called to the scene.
