ELMWOOD PARK — A two-alarm fire broke out inside the Marcal Paper plant on Wednesday morning, but it was quickly extinguished.

According to Elmwood Park Fire Chief Michael Pressler, the 2nd Alarm was called to help with manpower at fire in the fiber division of Soundview Paper Company which makes Marcal products.

Bales of shredded paper set to be recycled and other rolls of recycled paper caught fire, Assistant Fire Chief Mike Pressler said. The cause has not been determined.

Firefighters from several towns responded to the fire first reported at about 7:30 a.m. The extra firefighters were called to help stretch hoses and move equipment to fight the fire. But operation itself “was pretty simple,” Pressler said.

Crews from Marcal used a font end loader and forklifts to haul the burning paper outside to a remote area where it was extinguished, Pressler said.

The fire did not spread to the building.

By 8:45 a.m. firefighters had reported that the fire was under control.
