Firefighter injured at VA steel plant fire

PETERSBURG, Va. WTVR — Fire crews from Petersburg, Colonial Heights, and Prince George all responded to a large structure fire in Petersburg shortly before 8:30 p.m.

The fire took place in the 3000 block of Halifax Road at the Industrial Galvanizers America steel plant.

Sources say the fire started at the back of the building and quickly spread. The fire is under control and the building is now going through a process of decontamination.

A firefighter was taken to Southside Regional Medical Center after sustaining chemical burns to the eyes. An employee from the operational plant also sustained minor injuries to his feet.

Both are expected to be okay.
