A large fire that broke out at a tissue factory in Laverton North has been controlled.
The fire was fanned by high winds which were blowing embers and smoke south-east towards homes around Altona.
The Metropolitan Fire Brigade issued an alert at about 4pm, and has sent about 60 firefighters to the Encore Paper factory on Gilbertson Road, in an industrial part of Melbourne’s west. The fire took hold in a four metre high, 2.5 tonne pile of tissues.
People in the suburbs of Laverton North, South Kingsville, Altona East, Brooklyn, Altona Gate and Altona North were warned they could be in the pathway of smoke and embers.
Firefighters contained the blaze around 6pm.
