A fire started by a lightning strike at a salt water disposal plant in Atascosa County has prompted authorities to close Highway 16, and it is likely to remain closed for several hours, Sheriff David Soward said Friday night.
The call came in just after 7 p.m. that the strike had caused an oil tank battery to catch fire at a plant about 15 miles south of Jourdanton, Soward said.
The fire has since spread and three oil tank batteries were on fire as of 9:30 p.m. Firefighters from Jourdanton and Christine are on the scene and have decided the safest approach is to let the fires burn out on their own, Soward said.
No evacuations will be ordered, he said, and no injuries have been reported.
