Fire damages IL alternative fuel plant

A weekend fire caused minor damage to the Midwest Biodiesel Products plant at 7350 Illinois 111 in South Roxana.

According to fire department reports, the fire was discovered at about 10 a.m. Sunday. The cause of the fire was not revealed. It was quickly extinguished and no one was injured.

The plant turns used vegetable oil into motor fuel through a process called transesterification. The alternative fuel creates less emissions than traditional diesel fuel when it is burned, and it makes the U.S. less dependent on foreign oil, according to industry experts.
