Fire in pump valve factory in NJ triggers evacuations of residential buildings

HOBOKEN, NJ — A two-alarm blaze at a factory on Park Avenue Tuesday night prompted the evacuation of two city blocks, officials said.

Firefighters and police were called to a single-story brick building at 1314 Park Ave. between 13th and 14th streets at 9:26 p.m. on the report of a fire at Sims Pump Valve Co. after a machine in the building caught fire and the blaze spread to a nearby office, police reports said.

Residents were evacuated from the west side of Park Avenue and the east side of Willow Avenue (one block over) between 13th and 14th streets, officials said.

Residents were allowed back into their homes after the fire was brought under control, Hoboken Fire Chief Richard Blohm said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and no injuries were reported. The factory sustained moderate damage, officials said.

Sims designs and manufactures cartridge-style and spring loaded-type mechanical seals for centrifugal pumps, according to its website.
