MILWAUKEEÂ – Hundreds of firefighters are battling a fire at a Burlington-based food factory that has burned for more than 36 hours.
Crews have contained the fire, but have been working on hot spots in sub-zero temperatures.
“Conditions are terrible when it gets like this,” explained Joseph Robbins of the Williams Bay Fire Department to TODAY’S TMJ4’s Nick Montes.
He stayed in his fire engine to stay warm while waiting for his assignment fighting the Echo Lake Foods fire.
“Got to keep the trucks warm, keeping the guys warm, so water doesn’t freeze.”
At one point, he was one of more than 200 firefighters battling the elements to knock out the fire.
“It gets pretty fatiguing…with the water,” said Robbins.
That’s why he got the call for help.
“That’s what we were waiting here for, to swap out and give the guys a break.”
The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
